All Level Meditation Group

The benefits of practicing meditation include reduced stress, improved sleep, and a more focused mind.  This weekly meditation group teaches the fundamentals of mindfulness and meditation and provides students with various meditation techniques. Our group can reinforce your desire for a home practice or help you expand your skills, and will connect you with other students that meditate. All experience levels are welcome, but no experience is necessary.  We welcome students from all religious and non-religious traditions.  Join us for one group or come every week.  Come early if you are new to meditation or want one-on-one assistance with your practice.

Funding Your Future: Fellowships & Scholarships 101

Typically it is someone who is passionate about his/her ‘thing.’ This session will provide tools and guidance to help you capitalize on your strengths and find your niche in order to compete for funding for undergraduate or graduate study. Fellowships and scholarships covered are only open to U.S. citizens. Not intended for international students.

Writing The Personal Statement

Your personal statement for application to the professional health schools (e.g., medical, dental, veterinary, optometry) is required and an *important* piece of your total application. Learn the DOs and DON’Ts of writing a HIGHLY EFFECTIVE essay that reflects all you have to offer. Get an opportunity to read and critique a sample of a personal statement. A detailed handbook for reference will be distributed.

What’s Up Wednesdays: Disability Identity and Peer Support Workshops
Feb 7 @ 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

A series of three workshops for college students, interested in learning more about disability identity and culture, community building and peer support, and designing for access and inclusion.

Each workshop will begin with a mindfulness practice (5-10 minutes), presentation of information in various accessible formats, followed by a group activity and discussion. Students will be invited to participate in all aspects of the workshops to the degree they are comfortable.

Pre-Health Committee Student Information Meetings

The Prehealth Committee Student Meetings are designed to provide you with all you need to know for applying for a Prehealth Committee Letter for application to various doctoral level health schools (e.g., MD, DO, DDS) and detail how the process will work.  The application deadline for those wishing to matriculate into a doctoral level health program for the fall of 2019 is MARCH 15, 2018, so be sure to attend one of these meetings to sign your intent form.

Storm Ready

An informative and interactive session presented by UB Emergency Management. Learn about weather patterns in Western NY – hear stories of historic winter weather events – learn about UB’s policies for changing scheduled operations due to winter storms – get advice on how to get around campus when it snows – learn about the phenomenon of lake effect snow – and – analyze advisories, watches, and warnings from the National Weather Service. Help UB in our quest to become a StormReady®* university!

Refreshments will be available.

*What is StormReady®? It is a National Weather Service program designed to recognize communities (e.g. counties, universities, military bases) that have reached a high level of severe weather preparedness.

Yoga for Student Living
Feb 12 @ 5:15 pm – 6:30 pm

This yoga course is open to all levels of yoga experience. The course will consist of yoga postures/movements, meditation approaches and breath awareness essentials that are key to maintaining wellness through the unique challenges of student life. Learning to balance the nervous system through ‘restorative yoga’ techniques will be emphasized in each class. No experience is necessary. Dress comfortably; bring a yoga mat if you have one (not required).  Please pre-register so we can contact you with any updates/announcements. Please note though that registration does not guarantee a spot in the room — space is limited so come to class early; first-come, first-served.
